If you are looking for Houses for Sale in Houston, the options are endless! There is so much to choose from and with Houston being the 4th largest city in the U.S., there is a wide variety of styles and prices available. When searching the MLS for Houses for Sale in Houston, there are several things that should be considered in your search. If you work in the downtown area, you might want to consider what the commute to work is going to be, whether you live downtown or in one of Houston 's many popular suburbs. If you are an urban dweller - little or low maintainance may appeal to you. Conversely, if you have a family - schools, neighborhood amenities may be more important to you. If you are downsizing - patio homes, condos, townhomes or brownstones may be an optimal way of life.

In addition to these considerations, there is also the way the city is laid out. So perhaps it might be best to go over some of the history and geographical data, so that in your search for Houses for Sale in Houston, your decision will be a well rounded one, base on wants, needs, geography, interests and the like. Taking these things into consideration and using a well seasoned Realtor from RE/MAX Associates Northeast when searching for houses for sale in Houston, will help to settle in an area that meets all of your needs and is a perfect fit. After all, it is hard to make a decision in a city that is 579 sq. miles, without a good plan and a good Realtor!

A Little History: Houston was founded in 1836 when two brothers, Augustus and John Allen, Real Estate Entrepreneurs from New York City, who bought 6,642 acres with the intent of founding a city. They named it after Sam Houston, who was elected President of Texas in September 1836. Houston became incorporated in 1837 and became the temporary county seat of Harrisburg County (now Harris County) and the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas. The city quickly went about the business of creating a port on Buffalo Bayou. In 1860, Houston emerged a commercial and railroad hub for cotton. By 1890, Houston was the railroad center of Texas. In 1902 Theodore Roosevelt approved a project that widened the Houston Ship Channel. Woodrow Wilson opened the deepwater Port of Houston in 1914, and the rest is history.

Since then, Houston has grown in leaps and bounds, absorbing several of the outlying suburbs into its' incorporated urban frame. Houston has a rich history of Sugar and Rice farming which is still thriving today due to is conducive soil conditions. It is also home to Texas Medical Center - the world 's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions, and NASA 's Johnson Space Center. No other city in the U.S. has more Fortune 500 companies except New York City.

Some factors that you may want to consider when looking for Houses for Sale in Houston are it topography. Some areas are like the wetlands, some are forested, and some open sugar or rice fields with few mature tree coverage. Being a coastal area, the climate is humid and warm most of the year, with mild winters. Because of its' geographic conditions and soil that is composed primarily of salt, peat, sand and shale, the southern part of Houston, which was originally farmed with rice and sugar fields, has relatively little mature trees. As you go to the middle of town, there are loads of gorgeous, mature live oak trees and traveling outside the loop (Beltway 8), to the north and northeast the neighborhoods are heavily forested with pines and live oak. To the south and southeast, suburbs like Clear Lake, Galveston, Baytown, Seabrook, and the like resemble the Everglades, with miles of marshlands. As you get close to the Gulf, there are long stretches of gently sloping sandy, coastal beaches. When considering your search for Houses for Sale in Houston, these geographic and vegetative facts may be something you will want to consider.

There are also several Master Planned Communities in Houston and a wide variety of Houston Golf Communities. So if living in a heavily forested area is something that appeals to you, you would want to search in the North and Northeast for houses for sale in Houston. If the beach and downtown lifestyle or condo and townhome dwellings are what best fit your needs, you would want to direct your search to inside the loop of Houston proper or to the South and Southeast.

Other considerations when looking for houses for sale in Houston that may be of interest to you are sports, both personal and Pro. There are several opportunities for children and adults alike to advance in the sport of their preference, in almost all of the communities. Your Realtor will be able to help direct you to an area that is strong in a particular area. For instance, if Equestrian disciplines are of interest to you, Katy has the best Equestrian Center for competition with many horse facilities around it. Over the years, the North and Northwest area of The Woodlands, Tomball and Magnolia have grown a strong presence in competitive horsemanship both in English and Western styles. Whatever your interest, lake sports, ball sports, you name it, Houston has it, and RE/MAX Associates is here to show you around town and assist you in choosing the community that is perfect for you and your family.
